Health Careers Promotion and Preparation

Texas AHEC East - Waco Region staff share with students what health professionals do and how appealing a health career can be. AHEC provides encouragement and support for elementary, middle, and high school students to learn about multidiscipline health career choices. Promoting health careers and preparing students for advanced learning improves the likelihood that those students will train to become the next generation of health professionals in their communities. We have a variety of in person opportunities with our most popular being the CHAMPS pipeline program that is held in the summer.

Community Based Experiential Learning

Texas AHEC East - Waco Region advocates community-based student education (CBSE) for health professions students, with an emphasis on providing primary care services for underserved populations. By facilitating health profession students’ clinical training and encouraging them to provide service to the community, AHEC hopes to instill in the student a desire to return to a community setting to practice after graduation. We recruit and maintain preceptors through Waco Family Medicine. We make every effort to identify new learning opportunities and to work collaboratively with health center and university faculty to identify options in primary care and specialty training opportunities.

Professional Education and Support

Texas AHEC East - Waco Region offers continuing education webinars for accredited CEUs, tailored for Community Health Workers (CHWs) and other healthcare professionals. Our educational series, including the intersectional health-focused "Mix it Up" webinars, and Quiet Side of Health, which covers a wide range of topics that address current healthcare challenges. Recent sessions have explored issues such as Black maternal health, disability advocacy, transgender healthcare, harm reduction strategies, and end-of-life care advocacy. These webinars are designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of health professionals, empowering them to better serve their communities.

Community Health and Development

Learning about prevention and treatment programs can lead to a new awareness and voluntary adoption of healthier behaviors. To foster healthy behavior development in individuals, groups, and communities, we disseminate articles and editorials through media sites and schedule community events to promote programs addressing a variety of community health issues. A broad range of health education programming is also available within multiple different settings.
